Frequently Asked Question about Success
Question:
I keep investing in self-development in the form of books, CDs, attending courses etc. but life is not improving. Is it because some methods just don't work and how can I be sure I am making the best investment?
Answer:
In short, any method that encourages you to change your thinking, feeling and physical actions in a new way will work.
All life improvements require a permanent change in our neural pathways. These are the electrical impulses that send messages to our body and mind instructing our behaviour.
These neural pathways are established by a repetition of specific behaviour. One good example is flossing your teeth. Even if you don't do it 100% I'm guessing you do it 9 our of 10 times simply because the information and the images you were fed before you started flossing over and over, convinced you enough of the benefit of doing it every day. You only did it every day because you wanted the benefit.
Even now years on, though there are times when you arrive home partied out and feel too tired to floss, you're neural pathways will now instinctively default your thoughts and actions to flossing as part of your evening ritual and if you don't do it you will feel the strength of the impulses from your neural pathways which you will sense as a kind of nagging. You will probably feel bad which is your body's way of saying "Something is wrong... we normally do this at night."
If we want to change these behavioural impulses then the thoughts, feelings and actions that establish a new behaviour must be built by the initial repetition until neural pathways have been built. Unfortunately there is no specific timing determining when this will happen for any individual, except to say the pathway will not be built until enough repetition in thoughts, emotions and actions has occured convincing us that we are serious and want this to be a new belief (and therefore a new way of living).
This of course is why many people fail. We don't see the result quick enough and so we quit doing the things we need to do... and usually we are probably closer to a breakthrough when we quit, than we realise!
Answering the question in short, any new behaviour encouraged by any method that gets us to do anything consistently will provide the breakthrough. At the end of the day, changing the quality of our lives is actually very simple in terms of instruction but the masses of self-help information and practices are in essence aimed at finding ways to motivate us by finding any method that will get us to 'stick with the activity' for a sustained amount of time.
The two reasons for failure are firstly, not knowing what specific behaviour we want to change and once decided, we have to prove to ourselves on a daily basis that we are serious about what we say we want to happen. We do this by being consistent so the method of re-training your mind and your actions must be something you will likely do every day.
Why I started sharing my breakthrough in discovery in how to stay consistent with changes in behaviour is because everything I had been told about what I needed to do to 'change' REQUIRED A CHANGE in the routine I was already stuck in and that was the problem in the first place!
In most cases, it wasn't that I didn't know what to do, I kept getting stuck in resistance or I simply couldn't keep up the new behaviour because it required an activity that took me out of my normal day. As I didn't get the simplest of things done which I was determined to do, I ended up feeling a failure and feeling even worse than before... sound familiar?
