This tale of five young travellers in search of wealth and wisdom illuminates the perils awaiting those who seek riches.

The five young men gathered close around the fire. The day-long trek across the arid high plains had left them weary and discouraged. Was this journey an act of otherwise sane men?

Certainly the elders could not be mistrusted. Their constant ramblings about the man called Jambali filled the air almost daily. They said he was a man of immense wealth and wisdom. A man who freely dispensed both to any who sought it.

Yet many had travelled to the eastern mountains in search of this man, and all had returned weeks later with nothing to show but callused feet. Was it all just a wistful tale; a fantasy concocted to give the people of their desperately poor village a reason to hope? This was the question that plagued the five travellers as they bedded down for the night, their hearts full of hope and their heads full of doubt.

The sun rose to find only four travellers remaining; the fifth having let doubt win over. His note by the ashes of the fire implored the four to push on, but he had returned to the village, unable to pursue a journey that held no promise.

And so the four travellers hiked throughout the morning and reached the tree line of the eastern slopes by mid-day. It was a welcome escape from the relentless heat of the desert sun. They had not walked more than 100 yards beneath the shade of the trees, when they happened across an old woman.

They told the woman of their quest to find a man called Jambali, and asked if she knew where to find him. She exclaimed that they were indeed fortunate, for he was a nomad and was camped for the day just over the next rise. She bid them caution however, as he was not fond of unannounced strangers to his camp.

Thanking the old woman, they hastily made their way to the rise and thereupon did devise a plan. One of them would ascend the rise to investigate the layout of the camp and then report back to the others. In this way they could best decide upon a method of entering the camp.

They elected a scout, and he ascended the rise while the others anxiously waited. After a short time the scout returned looking forlorn and discouraged. He announced to the others that he did not see the camp of a wealthy man, rather was it the camp of a pauper. He spoke of a man dressed in rags and a tent of simple design.

And then this traveller did proclaim their journey a fool’s adventure, and he marched back into the desert with a heavy heart.

The remaining three travellers were not so easily dissuaded. One was elected and he ascended the rise to scout the camp. He shortly returned with a puzzling report. Not only was this man without wealth, but he was also crazy. He told of a man standing in front of his tent waving his arms wildly in the air, screaming obscenities at an unseen demon.

And as before, this traveller also proclaimed their journey a fool’s adventure, and marched back into the desert… with a perplexed heart.

The remaining two travellers had not come this far to give up so easily. One of the pair ascended the rise, only to quickly return shaking with fear. He exclaimed that the man was indeed acting crazy, but not because of an unseen demon, rather because there was a tiger crouched in the trees ready to devour the man.

This traveller hastily declared their journey a fool’s adventure, and hurried back into the desert… with a fearful heart.

The last traveller began his ascent. He reached the top and peered into the camp. He too witnessed a tiger of great ferocity, but he put his fear aside and decided to help the man defeat the beast.

He quickly fashioned a makeshift spear using a dry branch sharpened with his hunting knife. He ran down the hill and jumped between the man and the snarling tiger. He readied his weapon and was on the verge of thrusting it into the beast, when the man suddenly let out a shrill whistle and grabbed the spear from the traveller’s hands. The tiger abruptly ceased its attack, then trotted over to stand next to the man. Obviously, a cruel trick had been played upon the traveller.

Distraught over what had just transpired, the traveller demanded an explanation. The man explained that the old woman had seen the four travellers approaching from the desert, and had warned him of their arrival. He explained that his antics were designed to invite only the most sturdy of heart into his camp.

The man went on to introduce himself as Jambali the Wealth-Giver. He invited the traveller to sit beside him and tell of his journey. The traveller did so, explaining that the trip had began with five, of which he was the only one remaining. He went on to tell Jambali about his people’s belief that all who visited him would receive wealth and wisdom.

Jambali told the traveller that his people’s belief was true, but that before wealth can be possessed, one must first have the wisdom to own it.

Jambali explained, “The first traveller gave up on the first night. He did not want to work at acquiring wealth.”

“The second traveller saw a poor man’s camp. He had not the vision to perceive wealth among ordinary things.”

“The third traveller witnessed a crazy man. He had not the vision to perceive wealth among non-ordinary things.”

“The fourth traveler witnessed a man-eating tiger. He was not ready for wealth because he had not the courage to overcome fear.”

Jambali watched as the traveller digested these words. They were powerful words that sank deep into the traveller’s heart.

Then, suddenly and without notice, the traveler rose to his feet and thanked Jambali for these wealth-giving secrets. He was overwhelmed with exhilaration at the wisdom he had just received, and could barely contain his desire to depart for the village with news of his good fortune on this journey. He quickly bade Jambali farewell and promised he would tell his people what he had learned.

And so, this traveller did declare the journey a success, and he trotted into the desert with a glad heart.

As the traveller disappeared from sight, Jambali strode into his tent and filled a ruby-rimmed cup to overflowing with a dark, red wine. He drank largely, allowing the warm liquid to both caress and exhilarate his senses. A drop escaped from the corner of his mouth and momentarily danced upon his chin, as if unsure of which direction to fall before relinquishing its hold to the ground below.

Jambali tossed the cup, gestured loudly to the barren desert which had swallowed the travellers, and dispensed his last bit of wisdom, “And the fifth traveler was ready to receive wealth, yet received none, because he did not ask for it.”

It is not often we are asked the question “Who are you?”… if ever!

Most of us never even manifest 10% of our potential simply because we are completely messed up.  We are a mess of alter egos, schizophrenic personalities… riddled with conflicts and contradictions.

The situations we find ourselves in and the questions we plague ourselves with have grown in size and have become more complicated SIMPLY BECAUSE we have grown further away from our real self. We think because circumstances change we are heading for a better life but what we are really heading for is the same experience which simply looks outwardly different.

So who are you really?

This profound breakthrough comes from asking the question “What are my values?” Often times, the way to answer this question is to discover what we don’t value which can be flipped around?

Example:

“I don’t like people who are impolite!”

Great. Now you have established you like politeness.

When you hear something or see something WHICH YOU AGREE with or leaves you feeling at peace with…. this is a clear indication that you are feeling peaceful because it MATCHES YOU. This means you are establishing more definition about who you clearly are.

Nobody can give us any good feeling that does not already exist within us; they cannot put a finger on a button inside us and make the emotion go “Oh yeah, that feels good“.

We feel it because we RECOGNISE it. Recognise means to “re-cognise” i.e. to realign ourselves with perfectly.

Once you establish and be more clearer about whom you are, what do you do with this; how does this empower your experiences and bring on more of what you want?

Once you have established your values such as “I love:-

• politeness, being sociable, kindness, having many friendships, caring about children, superficiality (or the opposite, intensity), fairness, situations where I am free to express myself, being able to work the hours I want etc.”… you must become a TEN in the behaviour of these qualities and practices.

The reason you create power by doing this is two-fold:-

1. If you clearly define the real you and become a TEN at being you, you attract you to the power of ten.
2. If you become a 10 at whatever value you are expressing, you help others to:-

• Either realise they are this value and you show them a superb example of what a 10 looks and behaves like;
  OR

• By demonstrating this value as a 10, you help others figure out more quickly what they are not! Example: you may be a superficial person which means you care about the most surface qualities such as remembering a person’s name, their child or dog’s name and so in the presence of somebody who is very intense to the power of ten you will quickly be repelled by their behaviour and they help you to see that this is not something that matters to you – you are in fact the opposite!

If you value fairness, do not automatically judge that fairness is a good or bad value and therefore because YOU value it, everyone else should. All human behaviour plays a critical and integral part in the world. Without unfairness, we would never get to feel what fairness feels like and how good it feels.

The universe is driven by laws which we need to live by in order to access the whole of our ‘personal universe’. One of the fundamental laws is the Law of Polarity which states that for everything that exists, there exists an exact and equal opposite; it is there for a reason and not to be questioned.

We spend so much of our lives questioning, experimenting, making investments into our life in the hope it will improve but we are wasting time and money.

The rules are already there but we were never taught them. Most of what we need to live a rich life has never been taught either in school or in our jobs and that is where we spend most of our time.

Your key to success is to become a 10 at the person you are designed to be… the way you know who you are is by listening to your true feelings (which I know takes courage).  You are going to have to fight to be the person you truly are because everyone around you is going to project onto you, their ideas of who they think you should be. It’s not their fault but for you to submit and play at being who they want you to be IS your fault…. or at least it is now you are aware!

* Life is not what you hoped because you made it complicated.

* You made it complicated because you didn’t get the results you wanted.

* You didn’t get the results you wanted because you kept doing the same things over and over…

* BECAUSE you didn’t know how to follow the SIMPLE RULES.

ONE EXERCISE you can do to help you establish your values which DEFINE WHO YOU ARE is to think of all the people you find attractive in life and be specific about why you like them. What is it you see, hear or see that ‘feels good to you’.

Let me demonstrate by my own example.  I find the following people very attractive TO ME for the following reasons:-

Oprah Winfrey – Genuinely cares about helping people;
Donald Trump – Like the way he respects himself;
Joe Vitale – I really believe this man holds love in his heart with everything he does
Robbie Williams – I like his courage to be vulnerable and be himself.
Larry Winget – Love the direct way he teaches, he’s not afraid to tell it like it is!

Now, you may not see these things in these people, however this is what I SEE and this is WHAT I REALLY APPRECIATE… which means this is what is of VALUE TO ME and therefore the true me.

When I read Larry Winget’s book “Shut Up, Stop Whining and Get a Life” I actually wept. I felt such a relief because in my heart of heart’s that is truly who I am. I genuinely hold love in my heart however I need to express that love by ‘telling it like it is’ and Larry gave me courage to be more of myself. I could see how I was still ‘playing it safe’ and not really saying what I really needed to say (as me!).

So do the exercise to find out what you really like about people and what really leaves you feeling happy and peaceful.  It can be any behaviour which attracts you but get clear now! This is clearly who you are and you need to be doing more of it every day NOT doing it when you get time to think about it.

You cannot afford NOT to be yourself for one moment longer.

We are used to focusing so much of our attention on what we can see and that is why we are working blindly for the most part. It is not precisely what we do that has the biggest impact in our lives, it is the thoughts and emotions behind what we are doing that the Universal scanner takes as ‘instruction’…

…and so much of what we actually do is riddled with contradiction, anger, frustration, hopelessness, exhaustion, jealousy, low self-esteem simply because we are totally off track.

You think that, by going along to a friend’s party just because you can’t let them down when in your heart you know you really don’t want to will gain you kudos; in truth, behind the façade of turning up and smiling, is ‘disrespect’ and an ‘unhappy feeling’.

In truth, unless you can be absolutely joyful when you arrive at your friend’s house, you have achieved nothing. You have insulted yourself and your friend and actually been more destructive than if you’d stayed home and been honest with your friend!

Einstein, The Universe and Leadership

Ever since serving a hitch in the military, I have been nagged by the question that’s been hanging around leadership since time immemorial: How can some leaders persuade people to believe in them and follow them and other leaders can’t? But it wasn’t the military that provided me with a framework to answer that question. It was Albert Einstein and his quest for the unified field theory of the universe.

Einstein is well known for his special and general theories of relativity, two of the crowning intellectual achievements of the 20th century. But what he is not so well known for is a magnificent quest that he carried on for some 30 years — and ultimately failed in. That was his quest for a unified field theory of the universe. And it was a quest that inspired me, in my small way, to find an answer to the leadership question.

Einstein’s special theory combined space and time into a single concept known as the space-time continuum. He spent the rest of his life failing to develop a unified field theory that incorporated gravity into the electromagnetic field. But it wasn’t his trying to solve the conundrums of physics that inspired me. It was his trying to unify the grand forces of the universe that’s so compelling.

Just as there are grand forces driving the activities of the universe, I’m convinced that there are grand forces driving the activities of leadership. Whether we are talking about small or large organizations, organizations of butchers, bakers or candlestick makers, the same leadership forces — leadership laws, if you will — apply. Or at least that I was my theory, that was my quest: to find the laws of leadership, if they did indeed exist, and then show how those laws can be applied in any organizational challenge. In short, we can have a “unified field theory of leadership.”

I won’t go into the details of how I came to develop the theory — only that after a quest of several decades, working with leaders of all stripes, I developed what I call the Unified Field Theory of Leadership Success. I’m certainly not unifying such grand concepts as gravity and the electromagnetic field; but my theory, in its small way, has helped many leaders around the world raise their leadership effectiveness to much higher levels.

Here then is the Unified Field Theory of Leadership Success. It is not magic dust to transform you into a great leader. It is instead a polestar to guide and help you invigorate your leadership and communication efforts.

The UFTLS is expressed as a series of four propositions.

• Business success happens when people get results. Clearly, this is not some strange, UFO- like concept. Instead, it is a BFO a Blinding Flash of the Obvious. Yet obvious or not, it is ignored by many leaders

• too many leaders. Too many leaders focus on enabling such drivers as quality initiatives, re-engineering projects, and cost-cutting programs

• at the expense of the people who must animate those drivers. For instance, I know of a company that is engaged in the fourth major restructuring in the past half dozen years.

• Three of those initiatives have failed, mainly because they ignored the human/leadership aspect. In fact, I propose that the new initiative is doomed to fail too.

It’s obvious why: instead of being driven by a compelling market strategy, strong products, or a vision of marketplace leadership, this new restructuring is being driven by a new computer system! The officers are restructuring the company primarily to better employ that system, not to better employ people for results. I dare say the light that they may perceive to be at the end of the tunnel will turn out in truth to be a search party looking for survivors.

Leaders do nothing more important than have people get results. Another seemingly obvious statement. Yet when I give talks to leaders around the world, and ask them, “What is the most important thing you do as a leader?” some 95 percent of them give every answer but this one. This is the only right answer.

Understand the power in the seeming passiveness of “have.” Leaders cannot get results by themselves. They need others to help get those results. Today, with speed, flexibility, and teamwork being driving competitiveness, the control-freak order-leader who must tyrannize and micro manage can’t compete against the leader who can build and motivate teams to get results. In short, the leader who can “have” others get results.

The best way to have people get results is not to order them but to motivate them. Like leadership purpose, motivation is another concept that is misunderstood by many leaders. If we misunderstand the concept of motivation, how in the world can we motivate anybody to do anything? Here are the four “eternal truths” of motivation:

1. Motivation is not something people think or feel but what they physically do. Only when people take physical action can they in truth be defined as “motivated.
2. Motivation is not something we can do to anyone. We as leaders can only communicate. The people we want to motivate must motivate themselves. The motivatee and the motivator are always the same person.
3. Motivation is driven by emotion. In fact, the words emotion and motivation come from the same Latin root, meaning “to move.” When we want to move people, motivate people, to take action, we engage their emotions.
4. Motivation happens best when it is triggered by face-to-face speech.

We lead well only when the people we lead are leading well. Let’s throw out the old concept of leadership. That concept is based on the idea of “followership”

— successful leaders being the ones who got people to follow them. Baloney! Today, the speed and scope of change in the marketplace demand a new vision of leadership, leadership that can not only deal with that change but actually speed it up and make opportunities of it. That vision is this fourth proposition. How many times have we heard this seeming praise, “They’re such great leaders, they can’t be replaced!”

Within the terms of the new leadership dynamics, those “great, irreplaceable leaders” are in truth poor leaders that should be gotten rid of! If the leader’s function is to have others get results, then the best way is not simply to motivate them but to motivate them to lead others to get those results. When we challenge our leaders to truly lead, we change their world and ours. Only then are we leading well.

Those are the four propositions of the Unified Field Theory of Leadership Success. Einstein failed in his quest for a unified field theory; but the success or failure of this Theory of Leadership rests with you. Put it into action. Guided by its ideas, develop strategies, processes, and leadership skills.

Because the four propositions do provide defining differences between leaders. Those differences are not as grand as the differences between gravity and electromagnetic fields, but they can help you do that very simple, down-to-earth thing that your career, that any career, rests on: lead.

So, as with children and their frequent propensity to experience earache, the body expresses that the pain related to something they are ‘hearing’ through their ears. What happens next? Parents can’t give them the freedom to express this pain, after all they are too busy dealing with their own pain and struggle…so solution?… medicine gets poured into their body and the body shuts up. Why? Because the body can only respond to our instructions. However, the energy which remains imbalanced still exists in its present form. The body needs a certain amount of ‘light’, life force for organs to live. Therefore you will experience the imbalance in your body. Over time, without any harmonizing or expressing of this discomfort, the pain, will express itself as sickness in an endeavour to make sure the problem is brought to attention more strongly. The real you has all the answers in the most amazingly perfect formula. The real you is going to manifest a rich life doing what you are naturally good at. That real you under those unloving layers is going to ATTRACT what you want in a much easier way than working your butt off. I come from a family background where respect is determined by how hard you work. I don’t know how many times growing up I heard conversations like, “What’s he like?” “Oh, he’s a hard worker, yeah, nice guy”. You’re not designed to work hard. You’re designed to enjoy doing what you’re passionate about, what lights your fire…there’s your clue, the energy and motivation you need comes naturally, you don’t see it as “work”. I’m busier than I’ve ever been, however it certainly doesn’t feel like work, there’s my clue. So, what would you do?

Let me guess, it gets left for a while. Why? Let me hazard another guess…

” I’m too busy” , ” I don’t have time at the moment “, ” I hate these jobs “, ” I can’t be bothered “, ” I don’t know how to fix it ” (make a note of your own reason(s) why).

This door handle is YOUR ‘energy in motion’, (picture the door handle in your mind as millions of units of energy surrounded by space resonating at phenomenal speeds so as to appear solid in the shape of the door handle).

You attracted that particular door and that particular handle into your reality. Why? Well let’s look more closely at the door handle’s function?

Function: “To facilitate and ease access”.

Imagine for a moment that the outside is a perfect mirror of your consciousness in action. The door handle is a physical expression of an aspect of your consciousness effecting the ability to “facilitate access”.

If the door was the access point between your kitchen and your living room. This would be effecting the “ability to facilitate access between your area of nourishment and your area where you centre yourself or relax “

Well, guess what? It has just broken/come apart.

Do you think how, and whether you fix it, will effect your consciousness and your belief systems that created it in the first place? If the science is in this situation do you think that the sooner you fix it the sooner you harmonise your channel to “facilitate access”?

If the door handle is your energy in motion and it has just come apart, there is a reason. Perhaps recently you have been vying for some better changes… the door handle is a test to see if you really want to change the programme and just how serious you are! Let’s imagine you are working at building your business to afford your dream home. Are you sure you really want a beautiful home? Or perhaps the door has broken because ‘the function needs upgrading’ to facilitate the changes you want now.

You might be investing money in a new business or wishing so many things about your life would change, however, the quantum mechanics of the things around you and your relationship WITH them is showing you what you ‘really believe and accept’.

If you look more closely you will begin to see why despite hoping and wishing, the mechanics show that there’s not enough instruction in support of the change.

Let’s take some examples of what might be your reaction to the broken door handle and see the true belief behind them:-

- too busy ; I affirm that I can’t fix my life because I’m too distracted with other things.

- not enough money ; I affirm that I don’t trust that I have money enough to fix my life. As it is, your body’s prime function is to prove you right, this will certainly continue. If you don’t take some action to prove you have changed your belief, things will continue exactly the same.

- can’t be bothered ; I affirm that fixing my life up is not important enough – I am STILL COMFORTABLE with where I am;

- I’ll do it tomorrow ; I affirm that, knowing the truth that there is no tomorrow, there is only the NOW… ‘fixing life up’ will never happen;

- I can’t do it myself ; I affirm that if I cannot do it myself then it cannot happen. Where did you get the idea you had to do it yourself?

If you were designed to do everything yourself you would have to build our own house, car, road, school, make your own clothes etc. The world would cease to exist. Are you afraid to ask for help to achieve what you want?

There are many powerful techniques in the world for attracting success. The common factor which gives them all power is ‘intention’.

Think about it. If a broken door handle is a physical expression of something within your consciousness requiring repair ” to facilitate access” why not use the act of fixing the handle as physical intention to correct the dysfunction and facilitate access again.

I believe that everything happens for a reason. Absolutely nothing we experience in our reality is “just there”.

Your home and all your personal spaces are a physical mirror of YOUR perception of YOU. You scripted your home the way it is. You scripted the heaters in the place and the design they are.

If your home represents “your personal space”, “everything over which you have total control” i.e. YOU , do you clean your heaters or “just the places you can see”. If you clean only the places ‘you can see’ this is why you have the result you get.

Look at your heaters as a physical representation of the parts of your ‘personal space – ‘YOU’ which are often times left or ignored because you can’t be bothered or “have to stretch” to clean.

You attracted the heaters in that way as part of your bodymind set up and they are still a part of your “personal space”. They have a relationship with you in some way so look at your reaction to them and how you “maintain/clean” them.

Use your personal spaces, whether it be your home or office, as if it were your bodymind. The next time you go to take a drink, check out the cup. Does it have anything like “You are an idiot” printed on the side.

Why are you keeping it? Ask yourself ‘why?’ about everything. Why do I have this cup? If you keep asking why, you will find the beliefs which are holding you back from attracting anything better.

Did YOU buy the cup?…why?

Did a friend buy the cup?… why? ” It’s supposed to be funny “…what’s funny about being called an idiot?

You daren’t throw it away?… why?… ” because it was a birthday present, they might notice “… what does this tell you about what you REALLY believe about yourself and the power you have over your own reality?

You are designed to have it all. The only thing stopping you from having it all is YOU.
